He was one of the most famous moderators of Northern Germany: Carlo von Tiedemann, who, with his trademark – made a sensation on the radio and on television on radio and on television. Since 1971 Tiedemann at Northern German Rundfunk (NDR) has been in a good mood for generations of media users.

He was heard and seen in TV programs such as “The current Schaubude” and the “NDR Talk Show” as well as in numerous radio programs, including “Hamburg on noon” and “Great Freedom”. Now the father of four children married in second marriage has died after a life full of ups and downs.

As his family told the NDR, the media man died in Hamburg at the age of 81. In the past few years he has repeatedly struggled with health problems.

Not an easy way to the TV legend

Carl Ferdinand Hanns-Joachim Franz Friedrich von Tiedemann was born in Pomeranian Stargard. The fact that he would end up in the entertainment industry was definitely not mated. His father Carl, 65 years old at Carlos, was a lieutenant general of the Prussian army. And his mother Fides a born of Kleist-with which Tiedemann was able to count the writer Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) among his ancestors.

In the turmoil of the Second World War, the family had to leave their manor house at the end of 1944 and flee to Holstein. “I had wonderful parents,” Tiedemann recalled in an interview by the German Press Agency on his 80th birthday 2023.

In addition, Tiedemann had to survive children’s paralysis and two brain tumors. At the urging of his parents, he completed an apprenticeship as a publisher after the middle maturity. But because of his interest in language, he felt drawn to journalism. He volunteered at the “Cuxhaven Allgemeine”, wrote as a police reporter for the “Hamburger Abendblatt” and went to Buenos Aires in Argentina for three years.

Excursion to ZDF ends abruptly

This was followed by Tiedemann’s unprecedented career at the public law NDR, in which he stepped in front of the microphone in addition to legends such as Victoria Voncampe and Alida Gundlach (formerly Fischer) and later Bettina Tietjen.

The mustached media man, who was also stadium spokesman for the HSV from 1991 to 1998, was also a career-bare media, and occasionally played small roles in TV series (“GroßstadtTrevier”), but also: His excursion to ZDF, which was launched at the beginning of 1984 with the “Show and Co.” series, ended abruptly in 1986 after eleven programs.

At the time, he terminated because he did not want to be forced into a corset that some television supervisors would have intended, the moderator once said in the NDR interview at the end of 2019. “I have never adjusted,” said von Tiedemann.

“I love this life without end”

“I love this life without end. I was always incredibly positive,” he said once. The attitude helped the shirt -sleeved emotional man who liked to open a barrel with colleagues after work. In the 80s he made headlines with prostitutes, cocaine and high debts. But in the end, Tiedemann took responsibility for his crash, paid back his debts. In the interview on his 80th birthday, he no longer wanted to talk about this difficult time.

Even in old age, the entertainer legend did not want to think about quitting. “It just doesn’t work for me, I always have to do something,” he said. In 2023 he no longer moderated live, but was always heard on Saturdays “Carlo knows everyone” on NDR Schlager and in the section of the same name on NDR 90.3.

“The charm is that I am moderating people who I know all personally – whether Tony Holiday or Bata Illic, I can tell about everyone,” said the moderator. However, according to NDR, he has not been able to work in recent weeks for health reasons.
