The king is running: Denmark Frederik at the Royal Run

Only a few monarchs are as fit as Denmark’s King Frederik X. Now he laces the running shoes again – together with almost 100,000 people.

Inspired by her sports infinfine head of state King Frederik X. (56), tens of thousands of Danes have once again shown their runner qualities. Around 97,500 participants were expected on Whit Monday on the streets in Ribe, Viborg, Horsens, Korsør and the capital Copenhagen to master the distances over a mile, five or ten kilometers at the seventh Royal Run.

Of course, Frederik was also there again: In the oldest Danish city of Ribe near the border with Germany, he ceremoniously opened the running day in the morning with sign and sword. Crown Prince Christian (19) wanted to run in Viborg, while the royal family in Korsør was to be represented by Queen Mary (53).

The Royal Run was launched in 2018 on the occasion of Frederik’s 50th birthday – at that time still Crown Prince. It is a huge crowd and a big folk festival at the same time: Every year, thousands of spectators line the streets to loudly cheer the runners. According to the organizers, there have never been as many registrations as this year.

Frederik has been a Danish king since the beginning of 2024 after his mother, the long -time Queen Margrethe (85), had left him the throne by abdication. In addition to the heir to the throne Christian, he and Mary have three other children, Princess Isabella (18) as well as the twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine (both 14).
