World champion advertises blood donations

Sami Khedira is campaigning for blood donations: one donation can save up to three lives, according to the soccer world champion.

Sami Khedira (38) uses his awareness for an important purpose: The soccer world champion and TV expert is campaigning for the blood donation. “I believe that many people are not even aware of how much they can do with a blood donation – namely to save up to three lives!” Explains the 38 -year -old.

Together with national player Lena Oberdorf (23), Khedira is committed to the #MissingType campaign of the DRK blood donation services on the World Blood Donation on June 14th. Celebrities, the media and companies let the blood group letters A, B and O leave – true to the motto “only if it is missing, it is noticeable”.

Only three percent of Germans donate regularly

“It is crazy when you show yourself that 15,000 blood donations are needed every day – a number that is not tangible for us, but which we can reduce with a simple blood donation,” explains Oberdorf.

“It can happen from one day to the other,” adds Khedira and refers to the unpredictability of medical emergencies. “More people need more, more young people who are regularly and long -term blood donation. At the moment, only three percent of the theoretically donable people in Germany are involved.”

Limited durability increases the problem

The brief shelf life of blood conserves is particularly problematic. “Since blood can only be kept for 42 days, even more continuous engagements are required here to meet the long -term needs,” explains Khedira, explaining the challenge. That is why he sees it as his task to use his reach: “It is a matter of course for me to use my reach to carry this important message outside and drive this number up!”

Width support from sport and politics

Khedira is not alone with his commitment. In addition to national player Lena Oberdorf, other well-known personalities support the campaign: “Let’s Dance” winner Pascal Hens, “Bachelor” Felix Stein, Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, “Tatort” actor Ferdinand Hofer or record national player Lothar Matthäus. Sports clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Hannover 96 and Holstein Kiel as well as the basketball players of FC Bayern Munich also take part.

“Due to their exemplary commitment, we can achieve even more people and ideally persuade to continuously donate blood and thus do an irreplaceable, solidary service to the community,” explains Patric Nohe, press spokesman for the DRK blood donation services. The campaign already has an effect: Last year, the number of blood donations in the campaign period was increased by up to 30 percent.
