Michael Douglas apologizes to Canada, Mexico and the EU and regrets the current policy of his homeland USA. But he also spoke about his father and children.
Michael Douglas, 80, asks the world for forgiveness for the USA. At the Taormina film firmly on Sicily, the Hollywood star commented on the current political situation. It was “the worst time” that he could remember, said the actor, who was born at the end of the Second World War. The world is characterized by “far too many conflicts”.
His country is “a lot of responsibility for chaos” in the world, Douglas continued. He asked not only the neighboring countries Canada and Mexico, but also all the EU countries and NATO forgiveness. “I am ashamed and apologize,” he said with a view to the USA under President Donald Trump, 78, whose name he did not give directly.
Michael Douglas receives award
Michael Douglas was honored for his life’s work at the Taormina film. “Michael Douglas is much more than a star. He is a cornerstone of modern cinema,” said Iris Knobloch. The President of the Cannes Film Festival presented the honorary award to the actor in Italy. “In more than five decades, he chose roles again and again that reflect the complexity of human nature,” said Knobloch.
At the film festival there was also “one flew over the cuckoo nest” – the masterpiece for which Michael Douglas was awarded an Oscar as a producer. The classic is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. With the haunting drama, the son of Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas (1916-2020) made his own name in the film business. At the same time, he became known to a wide audience with the crime series “The Streets of San Francisco” as an actor. At the end of the 1970s, he finally made his breakthrough on the cinema screen.
Emotional memory of his father Kirk
In his acceptance speech, Michael Douglas remembered the time when he was “one flew over the cuckoo nest” on a promo tour in Italy. At that time he met some of the country’s largest directors – it felt like “a big family”.
At the same time, the actor looked back at a formative moment in his youth: as a 16-year-old, together with his father, he visited the legendary Cinecittà studios in Rome. “I am touched when I show myself that my father and I have made over 150 films in 80 years,” said Douglas visibly moved.
The actor promised that the Douglas dynasty will not end with him. “I would like to say that all my three children want to be an actor-maybe there is another generation,” said Douglas, who has been married to his fellow actor Catherine Zeta-Jones, 55, since 2000.
