After “Gossip Girl”, Chace Crawford felt trapped in a “Pretty Boy” prison until “The Boys” came.
For millions of fans, Chace Crawford was the charming Nate Archibald from “Gossip Girl” for years. But what looked like a career jumping board to the outside turned out to be a golden cage for the actor. I revealed Crawford how much the success of the hit series initially restricted him.
“It definitely felt like a prison,” said the 39-year-old in retrospect about the time after “Gossip Girl”. Crawford was looking for roles that could free him from his typing. The breakthrough finally came in 2019 with the Amazon series “The Boys”, in which he plays The Deep – a narcissistic and morally questionable superhero who can communicate with marine dwellers.
“At first I was skeptical,” admits Crawford. “When I read the script, I thought: This is completely crazy. And when I read the pilot film, I thought: ‘Oh, that’s damn great. It’s so unusual and original and strange.'” Crawford said he immediately felt connected to the figure of The Deep. “In the special role of The Deep … I know the guy. I know, I basically know a hundred such guys. So I immediately felt safe and was thrilled to interpret the figure.”
Nervous audition with a surprising end
The audition for “The Boys” was initially anything but promising. Crawford felt insecure and assumed not to get the role. The turn came when he learned that showrunner Eric Kripke was present with every audition.
“I played a dark scene and a rather comedic one,” recalls Crawford. The comedic scene “made Kripke laugh” and gave Crawford the necessary trust. “It was great. I was so happy to have a job again that inspired me and that the character was so different from anything I had done before,” he added.
Today Crawford can be seen as a fan favorite at “The Boys” and has proven that it is much more than just a pretty face.
