Christina Aguilera does not regret “Dirrty”. The controversy hit of 2002 “incredibly strengthened,” said the singer.
More than two decades after the publication of her unchanged proud of the song, which triggered a real storm of indignation in 2002. At an event in Santa Monica, the 44 -year -old spoke openly about the reactions at the time – and why she felt “incredibly strengthened” despite all the criticism.
“I remember exactly when I had to take my ‘Striped’ album and had to take quite a fierce criticism for my song ‘Dirrty’,” said Aguilera during a discussion round. For the singer, “Dirrty” was much more than just a provocative song – it was a statement of self -determination. “For me, it felt incredibly strengthening to own my body and express myself as I wanted it,” she said. Accordingly, the track was its conscious rebellion against the “strange pop chewing gum Manufaktur roboting”, which was driven by Labels, which, in her own words, was never.
The song with rapper Redman, published on September 3, 2002, marked a radical image change from the artist, who had previously recorded three albums under strict label control. “The label wanted to push this sugar -sweet, almost virgin image that just didn’t me”. She wanted to free herself from this “really wrong and superficial” picture.
Criticism as a motivation boost
Particularly fascinating: The more resistance Aguilera received for her daring look, the more fun she had. “I have to say that the more annoyance I got to wear, the more fun it was me,” she revealed to “People” in 2021. Incidentally, she has kept the iconic chaps from the music video to this day: “We definitely archived the look and God, I only hope you are still in good condition after all these years.”
Aguilera also made the public’s negative reaction to the public. “It was very interesting for me to hear why other people were of the opinion that I shouldn’t do that why I shouldn’t have a right to my own voice over my own body,” she reflected at the event in Santa Monica.
Teaching for the next generation
These experiences also shape their role as a mother today. Aguilera, who has ex-husband Jordan Bratman son Max Liron (16) and with her engaged Matt Rutler daughter Summer Rain (10), would like to clarify her children differently: “When I got older and now I have a daughter, it is really important for me to ensure that she is informed and is not afraid to ask questions.”
Today, over 20 years later, Aguilera looks back on her decision with satisfaction. Since 2022 she has been a co-founder of Playground, a company for sexual health, and continues to fight for the self-determination of women. Your message is clear: “I have now reached a maturity where your opinion is shit. I will not take it over. The opinions of other people about me are none of my business.”
