Kim Cattrall rejected the Samantha role four times. At 41 she felt too old for such a sexually confident figure, she said now.
It is difficult to imagine, but the now iconic figure of the Samantha Jones would almost never have been created – at least not in the form of Kim Cattrall. The Golden Globe winner, who breathed into the self-confident Samantha life, initially needed a lot of persuasion. In one, the 67-year-old actress recently revealed that she initially rejected the role four times.
The reason for her reluctance was surprisingly personal: “Even imposed age discrimination”, as Cattrall calls it. At the age of 41 she felt too old to embody such a sexually confident and revealing figure. The idea of embodying a woman at this age who lives out her sexuality so openly initially gave her discomfort.
In the meantime, the times have changed, said Cattrall: “That changed – 40 became sexy. It became a man, let us have more of it,” she told “The Times”.
“Samantha just enjoyed the main course”
In the interview, Cattrall also emphasizes that Samantha Jones was by no means a superficial figure: “She was not a nymphomaniac – well, some people may have thought that – but she simply enjoyed the main course. All other nibbles on the starters while she wanted the steak and it was always on her conditions – I always insisted on that.”
It is also interesting that the actress herself is the complete opposite of her most famous role. “But in many ways I am the antithesis of her,” revealed Cattrall. “I am a serial monogamist, and more.”
The HBO series “Sex and the City”, based on Candace Bushnell’s column in the “New York Observer”, ran over six seasons from 1998 to 2004 and became a cultural phenomenon. This was followed by two movies in 2008 and 2010 and the successor series “And Just Like That …”, which started in 2021 on HBO Max.
Legacy without remorse
In retrospect, Cattrall is satisfied with her decision and the legacy that she created. “I created a fantastic figure that I loved and I put a lot of love in. And if I only remember it, that’s really okay,” she said “The Times”.
In the new series “And Just Like That …” you will probably not see Samantha anymore. After public differences with her co-actress Sarah Jessica Parker, Cattrall decided against a return to the series. Nevertheless, she granted the fans a short Samantha appearance in the final of the second season. The third season of the successor series started on May 29, this time finally without the iconic Samantha Jones.
