Michel Bergmann is dead. The Jewish writer died in Berlin on Sunday at the age of 80.
Michel Bergmann (1945-2025) died. That reports. Bergmann died on Sunday, June 15th, “after a short serious illness” in Berlin. This was announced by the family of the Jewish authors. “We mourn our esteemed author, whose humor and cleverness have always enriched us,” says a message from the Diogenes publisher.
From journalism to the film
Bergmann was born as a child of an interned Jewish refugees on January 6, 1945 in Riehen near Basel, as the Swiss book publisher writes. He spent early childhood in Paris, his later youth in Frankfurt am Main. The writer who lived in Berlin initially devoted himself to journalism after his studies.
Later, Bergmann worked as a director, producer and screenwriter – among others for “Otto – The Disaster Film” and “It was once in Germany” with Moritz Bleibtreu (53) and Antje Traue (44), which was based on his 2010 novel “Die Partacher” and the continuation “Machloikes”.
According to Diogenes, eight more books appeared after “Die Partacher” – including “Mameleben or the stolen happiness”. Elke Heidenreich (82): “We laugh and cry when reading and congratulating the author to a grand, unforgettable book, written out of pain and love.”
So far, three volumes of the “The Rabbi and the Commissioner” series about Henry Silberbaum have been published by Heyne Verlag. The publication of the fourth volume “You shouldn’t lie” is planned for August 13, 2025.
