False report about Elfriede Jelinek’s death spread rapidly

Many media jumped on the duck.

The “Rowohlat” Twitter account is given as the source. There it was said a short time later: “This account is hoax created by Italian journalist Tommasso DeBedetti.” On Tuesday afternoon, Rowohlt Verlag said that the account was not associated with the publisher. This deceptively real false report was spread through the fake account that has existed for years:

Previously, the message had spread like a running fire on the Internet. Numerous German -language news sites, including quality media such as the standard, had to correct their reports afterwards. Even the Wikipedia entry about the Nobel Prize winner had already been changed.
