The ZDF says goodbye to the former “Today” boss Ekkehardt Gahntz, who died at the age of 79.

The ZDF mourns the loss of Ekkehardt Gahntz, who died last Monday at the age of 79. For over 25 years, Gahntz was “in the service of the ZDF news”, according to a press release from the Mainz broadcaster. From 1975 he was on duty as an editor in the “Today” Studio, from 1986 he moderated the “Today Journal”. Around three years later, he helped to found the “ZDF afternoon magazine”, where he was the first director. To date, the show is still an integral part of the ZDF program.

For a long time he did not stay away from the news division, as early as 1991 he was drawn back to the “today” editorial team, which he led for nine years. Later, Gahntz also worked as head of the ZDF main editorial team economy, social affairs and the environment.

Gahntz had “safe feeling for the essentials”

“Ekkehardt Gahntz has decisively shaped the profile of the ZDF messages for decades,” ZDF editor-in-chief Bettina Schausten is cited. “With a safe sense of the essential and great journalistic integrity, he shaped our reporting. The ZDF mourns an extraordinary newsman.”
