The Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek has a strange experience for the second time: a false report about her death has been spread on the Internet.
The falconacies about the alleged death of the Austrian Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek caused a stir on Tuesday. Numerous German-language news portals reported, citing an alleged notification from Rowohlt publishing house in online service X that the writer died at the age of 78. In conversation with the AFP news agency, Jelinek reacted with dry humor.
“Oh, again? It’s the second time that I’m dead,” said the author AFP. “Has already happened last year. I live,” she added. Rowohlt spokeswoman Nora Gottschalk also announced that it was a “false report”. She did not provide information on how this came about.
Verlag corrects alleged death of Elfriede Jelinek
The Rowohlt-Verlag also published a clear Dementi on X. “The rumor is that Elfriede Jelinek has died. This is not true!” It said in the post, in which the headlines of articles about Jelinek’s alleged death were overwritten in fat red letters with “fake”. The deception was then reported online.
Jelinek has released novels like “The Piano Player”, but also a number of plays. It was honored with numerous prizes, including the Nobel Prize in 2004.
