In the Pride month of June, AIDShilfe wants to reach gay men with videos. YouTube bumps into some content and switches off the channel. The streaming giant reacts to censorship allegations.
The YouTube streaming service temporarily deleted the channel of a queer prevention campaign of the German AIDShilfe (DAH). “After careful examination, we restored the channel and provided a video with an age limit,” said a YouTube spokesman on the DPA request.
Previously, the AIDShilfe had publicly criticized the shutdown as a censorship and spoke of a “sad highlight of a sexual policy of the large social media groups from the USA”. It was about the campaign “I know what I do”.
The YouTube spokesman continued: “We apply age restrictions on videos that may not be suitable for younger spectators. If we are drawn to the fact that a video was erroneously removed, we will react immediately to restore it.”
AIDShilfe: The basic problem is not solved
The spokesman for the German Aidshilfe, which had designed the campaign, emphasized: “The channel was only restored after our public protest, the previous complaint was rejected. Here too we had already referred to the fact that it was a prevention channel.” The offer is aimed at gay men and other queer people.
“We are pleased that we can now work with the YouTube channel again,” says the “I know what I do”. “However, the basic problem is not solved: what we can publicly say about sexuality is massively restricted by the rules of the social media group.”
Since these US companies are dominant, AIDShilfe claims to have no choice. “We have to address our target groups where they are. It may not be that we have to encrypt information about sexuality and constantly work with the risk of being censored.”
The AIDShilfe complains: “Enlightenment about HIV and venereal diseases is made more difficult via the sexual -anti -sex censorship practices, sometimes impossible. At the same time, for example, anti -queer and other discriminatory content is often not blocked.”
