The composer, guitarist and solo star talked about the decision during an appearance in Stick To Football with the former soccer player Roy Keane. There he recalled the moment when he formed the band when he was a teenager and his decision to get away from the group.
Remembering how he formed the group intentionally when he was a teenager, he explained how he was given the role of Manager and fought to handle the great responsibilities that were imposed when the band achieved success and he had just over 20 years.
“We were all very young”said. “We weren’t friends from school … I wanted to form a band, so I went to look for members. We learned to love each other very fast and we became very friends, but we didn’t know each other well.”
“Five years later, when we played for 10,000 people […] He was 23 years old! I was in a meeting with accountants, where they explained to me tax laws that I did not understand, “he added.” I was having a great time until I stopped being. I felt miserable. I thought The Smiths was the best band in the world at that time. I was very proud of us and I loved the music we made. I love them very much, but relationships break, and that’s life. ”
He continued sharing that, although he now realizes that he was “bold” to leave the band at age 24, he does not regret the decision, since he allowed him to work with bands like The pretenders, The Cribs and Theand also taught him how to sail in the band’s surroundings more mature.
Johnny Marr’s reason to reject a the Smiths meeting
“It was an emotional, but not impulsive decision. I was thinking for a long time and broke my heart,” he said, before they asked him if he would ever consider meeting his Smiths teammates for a meeting tour.
“They made us an offer recently, but I said no”he explained. “It was a bit a matter of principle, but I am not an idiot, I simply believe that the atmosphere is not adequate.”
“It was an exorbitant amount of money, but I also like what I do now, which makes it much easier. I like where I am. I want to write the best song I have written. I want to be a best performer.”
The reference to the return offer probably refers to the statement that the leader, Morrisseyshared last year after the news of the meeting of Oasisstating that the AEG Entertainment group offered the Smiths surviving members a “lucrative offer” to organize a world tour. The singer said he was interested, but that he finally failed because “Marr ignored the offer”.
