Illustrated book “Venice Beach”: homage to hippies, freaks and bodybuilder

Illustrated book “Venice Beach”
A tribute to the home of hippies, freaks and body artists

The American fitness movement was created here, later hippies and freaks came and celebrated a new culture of life. The illustrated book “Venice Beach” celebrates a mythical place that threatens to lose its uniqueness.

Venice Beach is one of the most famous places in Southern California. Numerous movements took their outcome here or settled here: the fitness movement was created in the 1930s, in the 1960s the surf culture became popular, later hippies, freaks, skaters and artists came. They all created a unique scene for which this area is known worldwide.

The photographer Dotan Saguy accompanied the residents of this district for three years and captured his experiences in an illustrated book. He is a tribute to these people who oppose all constraints and norms and uninhibitedly live out their individuality.

The scene in Venice Beach is threatened

Saguy may be able to implement the project just in time: because the continued existence of this unique life culture is threatened. The gentrification, which is also progressive elsewhere, also shows its effect here: rising rents takes place here, a creeping displacement competition that sells the long -established population. Dotan Saguy created this person with his book a lasting monument.

The illustrated book “Venice Beach. The Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise” by Dotan Saguy is i published and costs 39.90 euros.
