The number of people who die in the immediate consequence of drug use remains high. Hendrik Streeck, the federal government’s new drug officer, raises the alarm.
2137 people in Germany died of their drug use last year. That is 90 cases less than in the previous year, as the new federal drug commissioner Hendrik Streeck announced in Berlin. An increase in deaths in young consumers under the age of 30 is particularly worrying by 14 percent.
“We have to react faster, more systematic and more consistently to new, more and more dangerous drugs,” said Streeck. There was also a sudden increase in the deaths in connection with synthetic opioids. The doctor also attributed the increase in artificially produced opioids to the opium ban of the Taliban ruling in Afghanistan, which had the Afghan poppies destroyed. Opioids from the laboratory took the place.
Hendrik Streeck considers System to be “too sluggish”
“We are experiencing a quasi pandemic dynamic,” said Streeck. “Individual outbursts, new substances, quick distribution, incomplete data – and a system that is too sluggish to react in good time.” Streeck warned: “If we don’t be careful, this development is intensifying a crisis with massive health and social consequences in a few years.” Streeck, who also sits in the Bundestag for the CDU, was positive about drug use, for example, as they are challenged by experts because they could save lives. He sees this completely unidologically.
The number of drugs has increased significantly in recent years. In 2023 there were 2227 drug deaths nationwide – and thus 237 more than 2022 and twice as many as ten years earlier. It was the highest number registered until then. According to experts, the number of unreported cases is high due to gaps in toxicological reports and autopsy.
