The treatment of chronic disease that affects almost exclusively women has so far been associated with high costs for the patients. Because in most cases the liposuction, also called liposuction in technical jargon, has so far been a private service, the costs of which can amount to several thousand euros per session.
In lipedema, fat and water accumulate
Lipedema is a fat distribution disorder: there is an uncontrolled increase in adipose tissue, especially on the arms, legs and hips. Water is also stored at the affected parts of the body – the disease is painful, associated with restrictions on mobility and due to the appearance of the patients with social stigmatization.
With the decision of the Federal Joint Committee, a body that defines the service catalog of the statutory health insurance companies (GKV), this therapy will become a standard performance in the future.
According to several media reports, it will be possible from the cash register to finance liposuction from the cash register from the coming year.
Strict rules for the cash benefit
However, the patients have to meet some prerequisites for this: If there is very overweight, this must first be treated, as the health insurance companies say. Six months before it is determined by the specialist whether liposuction makes sense, the patient may no longer have increased in body weight. If there is obesity, i.e. obesity, it must first be treated.
Liposuction may also only be carried out if conservative treatments have not previously been helped, such as compressions, lymphatic drainage or movement therapy.
The news that the cash register pays treatment against lipedema should still make great relief among those affected. Because the disease limits everyday life and quality of life of the sick patients – so far, expensive treatment has so far been a further great concern of the patients concerned.
