Consumer advocates warn of sugar substitutes with not clearly marked and laxative effects in sweets. These ingredients could trigger diarrhea.
With a sample of 16 riegel, gummy bears and other goods sweetened with so -called sugar substances, all products would have shown a content of over ten percent, the Hamburg Consumer Center explained on Wednesday. From this threshold, the warning “can have a laxative effect with excessive consumption” – but the hint can hardly be seen on some packs.
The indication of “the food of our sample is not really helpful anyway,” explained Jana Fischer from the consumer center. “Small consumption quantities are likely to be sufficient to trigger diarrhea in sensitive people.” This could “be the case from ten grams of Maltit or Sorbit per portion,” she continued. Maltit and sorbita are sugar alcohols that belong to the sugar substance.
Already three pieces of vineyards can cause diarrhea
As the frontrunner of the sample of the content of sugar alcohol, the consumer advocates made the sugar -free mint candy ticttac Two Fresh & Mild Spearmint Flavor: they almost completely consisted of Sorbit – 97 percent. Another bar contained 17 percent. In some bars, half are sufficient to achieve the critical value – the consumer center continued with the vineyard gums by de Bron. “Nobody understands such quantities by excessive consumption,” said Fischer.
In detail, only two fruit rubber packs clearly pointed out how many fruit gums without a diarrhea can only be eaten, as the consumer center said: “The border is five each.”
