Defecting meat and fish is a trend that more and more people are following. But the statistics show that there are not as many as it may look.
Around four percent of the people in Germany according to their own statements feed vegetarian and eat neither meat nor fish. About one percent lives vegan and also dispenses with other animal products such as milk and eggs, as the Max Rubner Institute in Karlsruhe announced at the weekend.
The data comes from national nutritional monitoring (NEMO), for which more than 3,000 German citizens between September and November 2024 were asked about their eating and consumption habits between the ages of 18 and 80.
Two thirds of the respondents therefore stated a mixed food of vegetable and animal foods. A good quarter described themselves as a flexitarian, which means that they would have meat on the menu at most twice a week.
Half of the respondents according to their own statements eat healthy
People last for different lengths. About 80 percent of those who rely on mixed food have been feeding their own information in this way for at least ten years. In contrast, only around 20 percent of the vegans have lived according to their own statements for at least one decade without animal food.
As can be seen from the study by the Max Rubner Institute-the Federal Research Institute for Food and Food-almost half of the respondents evaluate their own diet as very or rather healthy. They estimated twelve percent as not or not healthy at all. These people often stated that they have too little fruit and vegetables, but lots of meat, finished products and sweet food.
According to their own statements, fruit and vegetables are only consumed by around a third (35 percent) of all respondents every day. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
