Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) said about the corona situation on March 11, 2022 in Berlin: “We cannot be satisfied. We are in a situation that I would like to describe as critical. We have a sharp increase in the number of cases again. The pandemic with of the omicron variant has shifted that the proportion of the BA.2 subvariant is becoming more and more important. This is not only a problem of increasing incidence, but it is also a problem for the hospital burden in the medium term. And it is already a problem for the people dying from Covid. I keep reading that the omicron variant is a milder variant. That is only partially true. And we have a variant here that is currently dying between 200 and 250 people a day. The number of deaths can go up The situation is objectively much worse than the mood. The mood among the population, including in parts of the political landscape, is such that we would have overcome the pandemic. E t has also been considered whether one officially regards days as days of freedom or whether one gets involved in this situation in a different way with the thought that it is behind us. This is simply based on misjudgment. And that the omicron variant no longer really poses a fatal threat to anyone. But that is not the case for the unvaccinated. And even those who are vaccinated can become seriously ill with the omicron variant and may develop long-term symptoms. The situation we are in now, the omicron variant is increasing very rapidly and we have 250 deaths a day, shows that we will not be able to get the pandemic under control in autumn without general vaccination. That just wouldn’t work. We will be in exactly the same situation in the fall as we are now. If not worse.”
