When I started running, a friend warned me. She said: “Take care of your bosom, it will wear out from walking and soon hang down one floor.” I just smiled at her comment at the time, but when I was standing in the locker room a little later and tried on running bras, it still resonated. And I made sure to buy a particularly tight one. After that I almost suffered from shortness of breath during the first few laps, because it cut so deep into my chest. But I just wanted to be sure.

To stretch or not? An eternal argument, we will give the answer

Today I know that my girlfriend’s objection was utter nonsense. So what is called “fake news” today. But over the years as a runner, I’ve also learned how powerful and widespread these myths are in sports. For our podcast “She’s running. He’s running.” we have already dealt with the question: “Is running really bad for the joints?” One of those modern day legends – which is completely wrong, but prevents many from starting running. In doing so, they damage their joints a lot more if they remain seated on the sofa.

In the last few weeks, more and more listeners have written to us and sent us all kinds of questions. How does sore muscles actually develop? Does stretching prevent injuries? Or does magnesium help against cramps? This is just a selection. All of them are important questions. A lot of half-knowledge about it is circulating on the net, a lot is contradicting and some is simply wrong. In our new episode “She’s running. He’s running.” we therefore ask: What is the truth of all the running myths? What is the current state of research?

There are many myths – most of them are nonsense

Some knowledge was new even to us. During my research, for example, I learned that female breasts swing up and down about 84 times per kilometer when running. But also that the tissue is not weakened, but rather strengthened. My co-host Mike Kleiss is happy that he finally knows scientifically proven that stretching before running is not the best idea. It even makes it slower. If you want to know why this is the case and if you want to find out all sorts of surprising things about running, then you should definitely listen to the current episode! We are looking forward to seeing you. And at the end of the podcast you will know exactly what helps against sore muscles, cramps, stitching in the side and the like. Promised!
