The “black fungus” can occur as a potentially fatal side effect of a corona infection. The disease is actually very rare – but now it is also occurring in Bolivia after several other countries.
A deadly disease that can accompany a Covid-19 infection worries South America: after the “black fungus” appeared in India, among others, a case has now been found in Bolivia. The country reported a first case of the “black fungus” in a corona patient.
As the Bolivian Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday, the 42-year-old was admitted to a hospital in the city of Cochabamba at the end of July and had to undergo two operations. The man’s teeth fell out after his corona infection, when he was treated in the intensive care unit.
“Black mushroom” was particularly rampant in New Delhi
Cases of “black fungus” in corona patients had previously been identified in India, Iraq, Iran, Uruguay and Guatemala. The Indian capital New Delhi even had to set up a special hospital department because of the rampant fungal infections. There were a particularly large number of cases of this disease on the subcontinent, which is actually rare, but occurred regionally more frequently in the corona pandemic. The “black fungus” occurs as a complication in Covid 19 patients, explains the “Tagesschau”.
The disease causes severe complaints and is often fatal. It is caused by the Mucor mold. It enters the body through breathing or skin injuries and usually affects the sinuses there. Diabetics and people with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to the life-threatening fungal infection.
In hospitals, the fungi can spread via air humidifiers or via oxygen tanks that contain polluted water, according to the “Tagesschau”. The infection cannot be transmitted from person to person.
