Six months after illness, up to 60 percent of those who had to be treated in hospital for Covid-19 report late effects. Of the patients treated on an outpatient basis, only 13 to 25 percent complain about it. The most common symptoms of Long-Covid include tiredness, shortness of breath, headache and cognitive impairment, which can still occur six months after the acute illness.
Risk factors and causes
The exact causes and risk factors of Long-Covid are not yet known. For example, there is no evidence that older patients promote this type of secondary disease. The common assumption that women are more likely to suffer from long covid cannot be confirmed either. What is certain, however, is that people who had to be artificially ventilated develop a higher risk of developing it. One possible cause for this could be organ damage as a result of intensive medical treatment.
