More than half of the population in Germany has already received it: the vaccination against the coronavirus. When the vaccination campaign started at the end of 2020, the vaccine doses were still rare. The very elderly and people in the medical professions were therefore the first to act. The time of scarcity has long since passed. Now there is one thing missing in particular: a greater willingness to vaccinate.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has calculated: In order to bring the highly contagious Delta variant under control, an estimated 85 percent of 12 to 59-year-olds and 90 percent of seniors aged 60 and over would have to be vaccinated. These are high values that, in the opinion of some experts, can hardly be achieved, especially since vaccination for children and adolescents between 12 and 17 years has not yet been recommended across the board.
The vaccination commission responsible for the recommendation (Stiko) does not categorically rule out such a vaccination. However, the experts point out that Covid-19 is usually harmless in children and that there is not yet enough data to make a recommendation in this age group.
“Every vaccination counts”
What happens if the required vaccination quota is not achieved in autumn and winter? the immunologist Carsten Watzl recently emphasized the benefits of each individual immunization.
“Every vaccination counts for two reasons,” said Watzl. “The first is that the person is initially protected against infection and disease. The second is that a high vaccination rate also serves as protection for all those who are not or not yet vaccinated.” A vaccination rate that is as high as possible would also weaken the effects of a possible fourth wave: “The good news is: With the vaccinations, we can get through a possible fourth wave much more easily. Without a lockdown.”
