Young people are often said to drink too often and too much. However, the statistics show that senior citizens in the EU are the most likely to consume alcohol. This emerges from a press release from the European statistical agency Eurostat. According to the latest data from 2019, only one percent of 15 to 24 year olds drink daily, compared to 16 percent of people over 75. Consumption increases with age.

Overall, 8.4 percent of Europeans drink every day. There are also differences between women and men: only 4.1 percent of women consume alcohol on a daily basis, compared with 13 percent of men.
In a country comparison, Portugal leads the way, with one in five people consuming an alcoholic drink every day. In last place are Latvia and Lithuania with just one percent. Austria ranks in the lower third with 5.7 percent of daily drinkers – but 34 percent of Austrians reach for a glass once a week on average.
When it comes to excess, Denmark ranks first: According to Eurostat, 38 percent of the Danish population drink a lot at least once a month – the equivalent of around five beers at a time. In Austria it is 16 percent, in Germany around a third of the people.
Across the EU, 28.8 percent of the population consume alcohol once a week. According to the data, 22.8 percent drink once a month, and 26.2 percent – over a quarter – have not had any alcohol for at least a year.
