A Briton died of a blood clot a few days after his Astrazeneca vaccination. His fiancé now receives financial compensation, which, in her opinion, is too low.
During the corona pandemic, no vaccine was discussed as much as that of Astrazeneca: Internationally, there were different specifications as to which age groups the vaccine should be used in. In Germany, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) did not want to expressly recommend its use in people under the age of 60. Rare but serious and sometimes fatal side effects occurred in younger people: certain unusual blood clots in combination with a reduced number of blood platelets.
In the UK, on the other hand, many younger people have also been immunized with the vaccine. Some died from the side effects, which occur with a probability of about one in a million. The fiancé of a deceased has now been awarded compensation of £120,000, the equivalent of almost 140,000 euros.
Compensation “not reasonable” for someone’s death
Lord Zion, as the musician and filmmaker called himself, complained of a severe headache a few days after his first dose of vaccination in May 2021 and died of a blood clot. The musician and filmmaker was 48 years old. As the BBC reports, a connection with the Covid 19 vaccination was confirmed on the death certificate.
Under the UK Vaccination Compensation Act, his fiancee Vikki Spit will now receive £120,000 – the maximum compensation possible. However, Spit thinks the amount is too small: The sum is not appropriate for the loss of a person who dies in their 30s or 40s, she told the “Mirror”. In addition, the amount has not been adjusted for inflation in recent decades. According to her, the payment should be closer to £180,000. Spit claims that the total should be calculated based on how much the person would have earned by the time they retired.
Vaccination with Astrazeneca: Serious side effects are extremely rare
“My heart is still broken after the loss of my partner of 21 years,” she said. “In addition to the emotional trauma, I face financial problems due to the lack of Zion’s contribution to household income.” She herself, emphasizes Spit, is by no means opposed to vaccination – on the contrary. However, the British woman also complains that the paramedics who were called did not initially take her partner’s complaints seriously and dismissed them as “migraines”. Had the problem been recognized sooner, the life of Zion might have been saved. She therefore calls for greater awareness of such cases.
The Robert Koch Institute speaks of “very rare cases of thrombosis in combination with thrombocytopenia” that occurred primarily in women under the age of 55 after vaccination with Astrazeneca. Statistically, however, the advantages of vaccination would clearly outweigh the disadvantages. In the UK, 66 people have died after being vaccinated with the Astrazeneca vaccine, according to The Mirror. In all, it is estimated that almost 50 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the country.
