Mast cell stabilizers in nasal sprays and eye drops
So-called mast cell stabilizers (e.g. cromoglicic acid) prevent the release of the tissue hormone histamine and other inflammatory substances from the defense cells of the mucous membranes. These inflammatory substances then no longer reach the tissue or the bloodstream. The drugs are sprayed directly onto the nasal mucosa or dripped into the eyes. However, they only achieve their full effect after one to two weeks, so that they do not help with acute symptoms. They are suitable as a preventive treatment for a mild allergic rhinitis. Overall, mast cell stabilizers are well tolerated.
