The fourth wave of Covid has long been underway in the USA, and the situation is escalating increasingly, especially in Mississippi. But instead of vaccinations, some residents prefer to use parasite repellants – from an absurd source.
Although President Joe Biden has treated the vaccination campaign as a top priority since taking office, the Covid numbers in the US are rising steeply again. States in which many vaccine skeptics live are particularly affected. The authorities in Mississippi are now warning that they are increasingly relying on dubious treatment methods.
The parasite drug Ivermectin is increasingly being used to treat Covid disease or to prevent infection, warned the Poison Control Center responsible for poisoning on Friday. The drug has recently been increasingly traded on social media as a miracle drug against Covid, although there is no scientifically proven effectiveness against the virus. The origin of the drugs ingested is particularly worrying: they are apparently bought en masse from specialist retailers for livestock supplies.
Livestock drugs as a miracle cure
“At least 70 percent of the most recent calls have to do with doses of the drug ivermectin that were bought from livestock dealers,” says a recent warning letter. The danger here is that the dosage for the much heavier farm animals differs significantly from that for humans, a spokesman told the broadcaster “ABC”. “It can be very dangerous to take the wrong dose of a drug, especially if it is intended for horses or cows,” said the horrified spokesman. Ivermectin could even be fatal for humans in doses that are too high.
But the worst case has still not happened. One person had been treated in the hospital for poisoning by the drug in the past few weeks, and another was advised to see a doctor because of the amount ingested. “85 percent show mild symptoms,” the letter warned, however.
The bad Covid situation in Mississippi could be to blame for the escalation. The state has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, but the highest incidence in the United States at 120 new cases per 100,000 people. In addition, the hospitals are slowly becoming overburdened. At the same time, ivermectin is freely available and does not require an expensive doctor’s visit or prescription. “Some people seem to take it as preventive treatment,” one of the state health experts said at a press conference on Wednesday, horrified. “This is crazy. Please stop!” In one example, he makes the absurdity of the situation clear: “You wouldn’t buy your chemotherapy in the animal feed trade either.”
