The corona situation on the South Sea islands of French Polynesia is dramatic. The incidence on the island of Tahiti is 2800. There is also triage. The delta variant is to blame for the location.
In the French overseas territory of French Polynesia in the South Pacific, the corona situation is dramatic after a massive outbreak of the virus. According to the French newspaper and the radio station, the incidence in the holiday paradise is 2800 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. In the hospital on the island of Tahiti even a triage has to be carried out, that is, a classification of the patients: inside according to the severity of their infection, according to “Le Monde”.
The infections with the corona virus have risen sharply in the overseas territory in a very short time, as reported. No cases were registered in mid-July. According to the New Zealand radio station, the delta variant of the coronavirus is behind the exponential outbreak. The one in Berlin classifies French Polynesia as a high-risk area.
Strict lockdown and outside help
To get the situation under control, a tough lockdown was imposed for two weeks, as RFI reports. Schools, for example, are closed from Monday. Shops selling non-essential goods, leisure activities, restaurants and bars “must cease operations” and “leisure travel will be temporarily suspended,” it said. There is also a night curfew.
There are exceptions for the way to work or training, medical treatment or vaccinations, necessary shopping or support for people in need. On Friday, the parliamentary assembly of French Polynesia voted in favor of compulsory vaccination, especially for nurses and people in contact with vulnerable people, as well as for chronically ill patients, as RFI further reports.
According to RNZ, at least 324 people are treated in hospitals, 40 of whom are in the intensive care unit. More than 250 people have died as a result of Covid-19, 100 of them last month. Around 275,000 people live in the overseas territory. Medical personnel would be expected from French New Caledonia to provide assistance. Doctors also come from mainland France to provide support.
