In the vaccination pass, the name of the Biontech vaccine is given with Comirnaty. This sometimes creates confusion – but the name has a well-considered meaning.
A look at the vaccination certificate after the Covid-19 vaccination causes confusion for some: There is nothing from Biontech or Pfizer – the names by which the vaccine is commonly known. Instead, you can find the words “Comirnaty” on the small sticker. This is said to have led to protests in some of the vaccinated people because they believed they had been vaccinated with an inferior vaccine.
Everything has its correctness: Comirnaty is the official name given to the vaccine by the manufacturers Biontech / Pfizer. What is hidden behind this name, however, is only known to very few. According to the manufacturer, the name Comirnaty combines various properties and meanings that are ascribed to the vaccine.
“Comirnaty” is made up of several terms
The name is made up of fractions of several terms: Covid-19, mRNA (i.e. the messenger substance), community (“Community”) and immunity (“Immunity”). In addition to the medical aspects, the social dimension of the vaccination campaign should also be echoed: a joint effort to defeat the corona pandemic. The name was developed by the Brand Institute in Miami, an agency that specializes in inventing names for medical products.
Scott Piergrossi, director of communications at the Brand Institute, told Fierce Pharma: “Ultimately, the recipe for success is to find a strong, distinctive name that will hopefully represent the hope and innovation that the product behind it is there for over time . ” The drug authorities have strict guidelines for the names of medical products.

Some of the other common vaccines also have names that cannot be immediately associated with the manufacturer. Moderna’s vaccine is called Spikevax, Astrazeneca Vaxzevria’s vaccine. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine trades under the name COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen – named after the pharmaceutical subsidiary of the Janssen-Cilag group.
