Mask production: “90 percent of the machines are now at a standstill”

At the beginning of the pandemic, the state invested millions in domestic mask production in order to be less dependent on masks from China in the future. Was the project successful? Does the industry have a future? Stefan Bergmann from the Mask Association Germany explains what is wrong.

The German manufacturers were subsidized with more than 60 million euros in state funds to build up a mask industry here. In mid-2020/early 2021 we were then able to cover our entire need for surgical and FFP2 masks ourselves and could also have supplied other countries with some of them. A third of the costs for the acquisition of the corresponding machine were financed by the federal government. The entrepreneurs invested the rest themselves because they trusted that the many authorities in Germany would take their masks off. But then that didn’t happen. 90 percent of the machines are now idle.
