My skin is very sensitive. In order not to stress the fine protective acid layer, the rule “less is more” applies to me in the shower. Shampoos and shower gels often contain fragrances, additives and preservatives, some of which can be irritating or cause allergies. Above all, the millions and millions of bacteria that settle on our skin and keep it healthy can be damaged. For almost a year, I only used apple cider vinegar to wash my skin and hair so as to minimize stress on them.

We live in a world full of artificial fragrances and preservatives. Sure, a shower gel is on the shelf for weeks, it has to be durable. It should also smell good. Fresh like apples, tart like sandalwood or whatever is currently trendy. Especially those who run regularly or do other sports wash and care for their skin more than probably no generation before.

Too much care makes the skin sick

“20 percent of skin diseases are homemade”, says the Berlin dermatologist and bestselling author Yael Adler in the new episode of our podcast “She runs. He runs.” This time the important question is: How do I best take care of my skin as an athlete? The successful author of the book “Haut nah: Everything about our largest organ” was our guest for an interview. Hardly anyone can answer this question better than the experienced dermatologist.

She reveals her best tips and explains why too much care makes you sick in the long term. Adler says: “You have to know that there are bacteria on our skin that live from decomposing components of our skin and sweat particles. This is what gives rise to body odor. I therefore advise you to restore a skin barrier that is as old as possible from the Stone Age.” How this works exactly, why you should go without showering for three weeks – she explains all of this in the podcast.

From Yael Adler’s point of view, however, a healthy diet is at least as important as taking good care of the skin. Because: The food that we ingest and the remains of which we excrete after digestion also have an effect on the skin’s microbiome. You can hear exactly how this works in the podcast.
