Resistant to vaccine? WHO classified mu variant as “of interest”

It first appeared in Colombia in January. “The Mu variant has a constellation of mutations that reveal the risk of an immune-evasive property,” explained the WHO. In the meantime, besides Colombia, she has performed in other South American countries and in Europe. While 39 percent of corona infections in Colombia are due to the Mu variant, the global spread of the variant is less than 0.1 percent.

Four variants “worrying”

It is normal for viruses to mutate. Most mutations are harmless and do not change the properties of pathogens. Against the background of rising numbers of infections worldwide, experts fear the emergence of a new virus variant in the case of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which could have an impact on the effectiveness of the available corona vaccines. The WHO currently classifies four corona variants as “worrying”, including the alpha variant, which is represented in 193 countries, and the delta variant, which is present in 170 countries and is particularly contagious.
