The most delicate treasures grow in the moss and on roots. Whoever wanders through the forest with the mushroom expert Wolfgang Krantz will be richly rewarded. Our author collected.
It has to be here, the mushroom paradise. Our baskets should fill up in this sparse forest. And even before our feet have even touched the ground of the forest parking lot, the first magnificent specimen is already there. “Don’t step on the chestnut!” Wolfgang shouts when I open the passenger door. A chestnut boletus, our guide explains, is poking its hat out of the grass. Wolfgang Krantz, 76 and “actually a musician”, used to be the guitarist for the Hanover rock band Jane. For decades, however, as a state-certified mushroom advisor, he has also been leading groups to the best places in the Lüneburg Heath and runs the “Braudel mushroom school” in Wendland.
