Free bus travel in Monheim: “We want to offer an attractive alternative”

Monheim is one of the first cities in Germany where residents can travel by bus for free. A heart project by Mayor Daniel Zimmermann.

When reports of the Corona crisis piled up in spring 2020, Daniel Zimmermann still had reason to be happy: the “Monheim Pass” ended up in his mailbox, a blue chip card. “When I found the envelope, I knew: the shipment worked, and with me this envelope has now received 43,000 Monheimers,” says Zimmermann – he is the mayor of the city. A project that is unique in Germany has entered the home straight: a free local transport ticket for all citizens of the city. Since 2020, those who have their primary residence in Monheim have been able to use the bus and S-Bahn in the city area for free.
