According to the latest study results, this is not true, said representatives of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG). Various advertised protective measures are therefore not useful.
Blue light belongs to the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum and is characterized by its abundance of energy. “Nevertheless, when using electronic devices, the light intensity is far too low to cause retinal damage to the eyes,” says ophthalmologist Michael Bach from the Freiburg University Medical Center.
No damage to eyes
The DOG expert Bach also gave the all-clear with regard to possible sleep disorders that the blue light could cause when reading electronic devices in the evening. This assumption has now been refuted by a study. Researchers had examined the effect of the “Night Shift” setting on the iPhone – the function dims the blue portion of the display light on Apple devices in order to reduce the alleged effect on sleep.
“There was no difference in sleep quality between the group who had Night Shift turned on and those who hadn’t turned on Night Shift or the group of those who didn’t use an iPhone.”
