New drugs for migraine in 2022

In Austria around 13 percent of the population suffer from migraines. This form of headache occurs most frequently in the age group between 20 and 50 years. Around 25 percent of women and up to ten percent of men are affected. “This is a chronic illness that accompanies people for many years and can affect family life and work,” says Karin Zebenholzer, President of the Austrian Headache Society.

Science is now able to understand how migratory attacks work. With new therapy options, the pain can be treated much better than was previously possible.

Oral medication is available for prevention. Monoclonal antibodies that act specifically against migraines and are injected under the skin have been available for three years. “Next year we are expecting approval of new drugs against migratory attacks. These have already been approved in the USA. We already know from studies that these drugs work very well and improve the quality of life of patients,” says expert Karin Zebenholzer.
