Some children have never experienced lessons without a corona mask. At least for many students in the lower grades, the mask requirement in Berlin will end next week.
In many schools in Berlin, the mask requirement up to and including sixth grade will be lifted from Monday. This applies above all to elementary schools, community schools and the first two classes of elementary high schools, as Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD) announced on Tuesday after the Senate meeting. “I think that now is really about the time,” said Scheeres.
Children in Berlin can continue to wear masks if they want
The subject of facial expressions is very important, especially for the little ones. “There are children who have been wearing masks for a year and a half and have never seen school without a mask.” The Senator emphasized that this had an impact on language development, spelling, reading skills and English lessons. However, children could still wear a mask if they wanted to.
In secondary schools, the mask requirement will initially only be abolished during class work and exams, according to the Senator. After the autumn break, the Senate will discuss further steps at these schools as well.
