The diagnosis: A small cushion relieves a man of his pain in the throat

A man has been tormented by pain attacks in the throat for years. A doctor discovers the cause – and helps with a small cushion.

Recorded by Constanze Löffler

The patient said he had been suffering from severe pain in the deep throat, near the jaw and in the ear for about five years. Attacks occurred when he chewed, yawned, sneezed, or touched his ear. An ENT doctor had checked the throat, pharynx and ears and found nothing. A dentist had examined the molars and wisdom teeth closely, but found no pain trigger. The man in his mid-sixties had been to the rheumatologist to ask whether the temporomandibular joint was showing signs of wear. Nothing unusual was found, the matter was a great mystery.
