The European Medicines Agency recommends the Corona booster vaccination with the active ingredient from Biontech. The third spike could take place six months after the second vaccination.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved booster vaccinations against the coronavirus with the Biontech vaccine. A booster vaccination with the corona vaccine from the Mainz-based company and its US partner Pfizer could be considered for people aged 18 and over, the EMA said on Monday. The third vaccination should therefore take place at the earliest six months after administration of the second dose.
Vulnerable groups of people already vaccinated three times
Some countries have already started offering booster vaccinations for particularly vulnerable populations. In Germany, residents and employees of nursing homes as well as medical staff are vaccinated again. Proponents of a third vaccination argue that an additional dose of vaccine increases protection against infection. Critics, on the other hand, are calling for people who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus to be immunized in developing countries, for example.
In addition to the companies Biontech and Pfizer, the US vaccine manufacturer Moderna has also applied for approval for a third-party vaccination in the EU.
