The heart wants to be trained. To do this, it is important to keep an eye on your pulse. It is especially important for beginners not to overwhelm themselves. Because sport works in an astonishingly small dose.

When I write about the subject of the pulse while running, I immediately think of a story that a sports scientist told me a few years ago. The man was a professor and saw novice runners in his practice every day. A woman around 40 years old had introduced herself to him, she wanted to start running and needed guidance. She had never played sports in her life. After a thorough physical exam, he advised her to walk first. After four weeks she returned and said: Every time I ran on the Alster in Hamburg, my heart beat so hard. Then she always stopped for fear that it would be dangerous.
You should pay particular attention to your pulse when you start
After a few questions, the doctor realized that the unusual physical exertion caused her pulse to rise noticeably. That was completely normal and, above all, harmless, but the woman had never played sports in her life. And had no experience of the pulse quickening when you move. Because she always stopped training immediately, she made no progress either. After a brief explanation of what happens in her body when exposed to stress, she was released. Four weeks later she sent a happy e-mail and reported: For the first time I managed the seven kilometers around the Alster in one go.
Why am I telling this story? It stands for so much. Right now, during and after the pandemic, many have started running. But we live in a time when most of the people lack sporting experience from childhood and adolescence. And because of that, they simply don’t know how their body reacts to exercise. Who do not understand what is happening – and who urgently need guidance in order to get off to a successful start as an athlete. But if they do not get this start-up help, they will unfortunately stop running again very quickly, frustrated.
That’s why we decided on the following topic for the new episode of the podcast “She’s running. He’s running”: The heart and how important the right pulse is for training. Because if you understand and know where your ideal pulse is, you can get started as a runner. But, we’re not just looking at the beginners. It’s also about the wonderfully healthy processes that running triggers around the heart. You will hear a lot of new things. Or did you know that the body of people who regularly participate in endurance sports such as running is able to develop natural bypasses?
