Three years and three months of international emergency are now over: At the beginning of May, the World Health Organization (WHO) lifted the “public health emergency of international concern”, the highest alert level that an infectious disease can trigger. “The pandemic has been following a declining trend for a year,” said WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and at the same time he brought bad news with the good news: 20 million deaths worldwide.
