Urgent corona appeal: top scientists write fire letters to politicians

With a fire letter that appeared in several newspapers, researchers have called for a change in direction in the Corona policy: Politicians must finally “fully meet their responsibility,” it says.

The number of new infections with the coronavirus and also the capacities: In the midst of this situation, leading scientists are making an urgent appeal to politicians and calling on the federal and state governments to change course in the fight against pandemics.

Politicians must finally “fully meet their responsibility” instead of “passive waiting” to increasingly shift the responsibility for breaking the fourth wave “to the discretion of each individual”, which was signed by 35 scientists from Germany, including Medical professionals and other professionals. “Every day of waiting costs human lives.”

The authors of the three-page appeal, which appeared in the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” among others, include the Cologne internist Michael Hallek, the Braunschweig virologist Melanie Brinkmann and the intensive care physician Christian Karagiannidis, who is the scientific director of the Divi intensive care registry.

“We are deeply disappointed about the threat to social cohesion and about the repeated negligence in dealing with the well-being of the people who depend on the protection of the state,” says the fire letter. “It is incomprehensible to us that those responsible in this country have allowed such a situation, although we now have important and effective instruments to put a stop to the Sars-CoV-2 virus.”

Authors criticize the dismantling of test and vaccination centers

The authors criticize, among other things, the dismantling of test and vaccination centers and the tracking of contacts. These infrastructures are “central and urgently necessary” for fighting pandemics. It is “not expedient” to “name unsubstantiated times as the end of the pandemic,” says the letter. The end of the pandemic is a “factual statement, not a political determination”.

The scientists encourage the establishment of a national crisis team – including experts from virology, medicine and public health.

50,000 new infections - Expert: Lockdown for unvaccinated people would make sense

The authors also emphasize the importance of global vaccination fairness and “coherent communication that trusts citizens, but also expects them to face unpleasant truths and provides clear and consistent guidelines for behavior”.

“The fact that such communication and uniform binding regulations are still missing undermines the relationship of trust between the government and the population, and thus also damages trust in the measures – including vaccination – and thus contributes significantly to the prolongation of the pandemic.”
