Munich: Christmas market is canceled – Mayor Dieter Reiter comments

The Christkindlmarkt in Munich is canceled due to the sharp rise in corona numbers and the location in the city’s hospitals. However, private Christmas markets may take place under the 2Gplus rule.

The city of Munich canceled the Christmas market due to the high number of people infected with corona. “The dramatic situation in our clinics and the exponentially increasing numbers of infections leave me no other choice,” said Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) on Tuesday after a meeting of the crisis team. “Anything else would be an irresponsible increase in the risk of infection and, moreover, the wrong signal. Especially for all employees in our clinics who are working to their limits.”

Private Christmas markets with the 2Gplus rule allowed

Reiter spoke of a catastrophic situation in the clinics. The pandemic officers of all Munich clinics had unanimously warned against this, and the health authorities and the district administration department had also urgently advised against it. The Christmas market around Marienplatz could not be delimited, so that the number of guests and compliance with the 2G rule could not be controlled, explained Reiter. This is bitter news, especially for the stand operators. The administration is therefore examining a financial compensation.

According to Reiters, private Christmas markets may take place if the number of visitors can be limited. The 2Gplus rule applies here, i.e. access only for vaccinated or convalescent people with a negative rapid test.
