Her family had already planned the funeral: But a few hours before the life support measures were to be stopped, a Covid 19 patient in the USA woke up from the coma.
The doctors had already given up on Bettina Lerman – and so had her family. The 69-year-old from the US state of Maine was infected with the corona virus in September, had to be ventilated for weeks and was in a coma. All medical efforts were unsuccessful.
The unvaccinated woman’s family finally made a difficult decision: They gave the doctors permission to stop the life-support measures. They were ready to say goodbye, told Andrew Lerman, the son of Bettina Lerman, US media, including “CNN” and the “Washington Post”. The relatives had already selected a coffin and a tombstone and made preparations for the funeral. Then, however, what Andrew Lerman calls “a miracle” happened: His mother woke up after all – the day the machines were due to be turned off.
Doctors saw no chance of survival
Lerman found out about this through a phone call from a doctor at the Portland hospital where his mother was being treated. “He said to me, ‘You have to come right away.’ And I asked: ‘Is something wrong?’ “, He told” CNN “about the conversation. “He replied: ‘There is no problem, your mother just woke up.'” At that moment the phone fell out of his hand, Lerman said.
Lerman, his wife and father were also infected with the virus. The disease was “brutal”, he told the Washington Post, but ultimately everyone survived the infection – except for his mother, who was not vaccinated. According to the family, Bettina Lerman had a number of pre-existing conditions, including diabetes, and had also had a heart attack a few years ago. The Covid 19 disease had caused severe lung damage in her. Irreparable, as the doctors initially thought. They saw no chance of survival.

The family had already closed the apartment
Bettina Lerman was in a coma for three weeks until she suddenly woke up again at the end of October. She can now breathe without a ventilator for a few hours at a time. Your condition is continuously improving. “She knows where she is and who she is,” says her son. Bettina Lerman is working with the hospital staff to regain her motor skills as soon as possible.
When she is released from the clinic, she has to build a new life for herself: Her children were so confident that their mother would not recover that they had already given up their apartment and donated some items from it.
