Air passengers from South Africa: Netherlands report 61 corona cases

Dozens of passengers who landed in Amsterdam from South Africa are infected with the corona virus. 61 of the 531 people from two planes tested positive.

In the Netherlands, 61 flight passengers from South Africa tested positive for the corona virus. The Dutch health authority GGD announced on Saturday that the tests were carried out on arrival at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The passengers arrived on two flights from South Africa. In addition to the 61 positive results, there were 531 negative corona tests.

The discovery of a new coronavirus variant with the scientific name B.1.1.529 was announced in South Africa on Thursday. According to South African scientists, the variant could be even more contagious than the currently rampant Delta variant because of the unusually high number of mutations and make the vaccines less effective.

Infected in quarantine

The Dutch authorities said those who tested positive in Amsterdam would be housed in a quarantine hotel near the airport. It is now being examined whether they have contracted the new virus variant.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has now classified the variant, named after the Greek letter omicron, as “worrying”. The EU Disease Control Authority (ECDC) considers the risk of spread in the EU to be “high to very high”.
