This case of illness shows that a quick diagnosis is rarely the right one

A boy has a stomach ache. Sure thing, the appendix – it seems. But the doctor makes a surprising discovery at one point.

A 14-year-old boy comes to the emergency room at night and complains of pain in the lower abdomen. These occurred more frequently in the last six months, but are now a little stronger. Previous illnesses are not known and the first examinations remain unremarkable. The boy’s descriptions suggest inflammation of the appendix. The age of the patient, the location of the pain, and the length of time it takes for it to recur, all fit this clinical picture.

But the ultrasound reveals something else: something is visible on the urinary bladder that does not belong there. What is this about? Further research shows that the simple diagnosis is rarely the right one.
