Syringe after syringe: This is how the world is vaccinating against corona

The corona virus continues to have a firm grip on the world and is constantly making new variants to ensure that there is no relaxation. Vaccination is considered the most important tool to get the pandemic under control. Where possible, people roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated against the corona virus. In the richer countries in particular, syringe after syringe is used.

The vaccinations are intended to ensure that infections are contained and serious illnesses and deaths are avoided. The goal is that at some point so many people are immune to the virus that it loses its assertiveness. But there is still a long way to go until then. The virus adapts, always creating new variants. One example of this is the delta variant, which is more contagious and dangerous than other variants, may also be more resistant to vaccination and is now causing an increase in the number of infections even in countries with a high vaccination rate.

Variants, variants, variants

“Mutations can also develop in the well-vaccinated population. The virus always tries to ensure its survival,” said Oliver Harzer, Managing Director of Bioscientia, in stern-Interview. If so-called selection pressure is built up through vaccination, “then we may also produce a mutating virus in Germany,” he said.

Nonetheless, the more people are immunized against the virus, the less vulnerable it can be. In addition, the scientists are working on making the vaccine even better. For example, the manufacturers see a possibility in the third vaccination, which is supposed to give the immune system an additional boost. In Israel, such booster vaccinations are already offered to people with weakened immune systems.

In Germany, too, preparations are already underway for possible third-party vaccinations, said government spokesman Steffen Seibert. However, the data situation is not yet sufficient. The manufacturers also stated that adapting the vaccines to new variants would be relatively quick.

In the meantime, the vaccination campaigns are continuing in the individual countries. We give an overview of the progress in the photo gallery above.
