The fourth corona wave has Germany firmly under control. Almost 5000 people are currently in intensive care with Covid. But who are they? A look at the numbers
According to a survey by the German Hospital Association, three quarters of all hospitals nationwide have already had to postpone operations that can be planned. Above all, anesthesiologists and nursing staff, who would otherwise have helped with operations, now have to help out in the intensive care units, said the Vice President of the German Society for Surgery (DGCH), Michael Ehrenfeld. “Obviously, these are the most highly qualified people to operate improvised additional intensive care beds.”
But who is currently in the intensive care unit with Corona? (As of: December 4th, 2021, 2 p.m.) are 83.8 percent of the current 4805 corona intensive care patients. The largest proportion of these are made up of people between the ages of 60 and 69, followed by those aged between 70 and 79. A good fifth of intensive care patients are between 50 and 59 years old. Every tenth corona intensive care patient is older than 80. The proportion of people between 40 and 49 who are in the intensive care unit is slightly lower. Only 6.3 percent of corona intensive care patients are younger than 40.
With 2560 people, more than half of the 4805 corona intensive care patients have to be ventilated.
Last Thursday, the number of people who were in German intensive care units with Covid in calendar weeks 44 to 47 will be 1721 in total: 4 between the ages of 12 and 17 and 598 between the ages of 18 and 59. 1119 are corona intensive care patients 60 and older. In the youngest age group there is not a single vaccination breakthrough, in the middle group 94 (corresponds to 15.7 percent) and in the oldest group 498 (corresponds to 44.5 percent).
More than half of ICU patients were not vaccinated
The clinic company Helios operates according to its own information. The company breaks it down on its homepage. Accordingly, in calendar week 47 (November 22-28) there were 563 unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated corona patients in the German Helios clinics. 364 of them were under 70 years of age, 217 of them 70 and over. 53 corona patients from the younger group were in the intensive care unit and 44 of the older ones.

During the same period, 353 patients who had been completely vaccinated against corona were in Helios clinics: 236 of them were 70 or older, 117 younger than 70 years. Of the older vaccinated patients, 21 had to be treated in the intensive care unit, of the younger 18. At least in Helios clinics, the majority of corona intensive care patients are not or not fully vaccinated. Since, according to 68 percent of Germans, were completely vaccinated against Corona, more than twice as many unvaccinated people end up on the “Helios” intensive care units as vaccinated people. In Germany, the figures from 89 “Helios” clinics are only of limited informative value – but they essentially confirm the figures given by the RKI.
