Mister Well-eloquentdo you gain weight faster as you get older?
The basal metabolic rate – the energy the body uses even when completely resting – is highest in young adults in their 20s and then gradually declines. If we eat as much as we did when we were younger, we may gain weight. We can prevent this by adjusting our diet slightly or increasing our calorie consumption through more exercise. But this is often not so easy at an advanced age: we may no longer be as physically resilient. This is why it can be more difficult to actively lose weight at an older age. What I then convey to my patients: Sometimes it is a success if they maintain their weight.
