In light of a new wave of coronavirus, Denmark is reintroducing stricter restrictions. The neighboring country managed almost without corona measures for two months.
Denmark is pulling the emergency brake and after months reintroducing stricter restrictions. The Christmas holidays for schoolchildren will be extended, the nightlife will be restricted and the home office will be increasingly used, as the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Wednesday. The health authorities had previously reported a daily high in new infections.
Accordingly, the number of new infections on Wednesday was over 6600 cases – more than 2000 cases above the previous high of December 2020. The number of infections within a week also reached a record with more than 35,800 cases.
Corona in Denmark: nightlife is restricted
The school holidays were supposed to start on December 17th and end on January 3rd. Now schools will be closed from December 15th to January 5th. “The plan is not to have another long closure,” explained Frederiksen, speaking of “extended holidays”.
Night life will be restricted from Friday. Bars and restaurants have to close at midnight. After that, the sale of alcohol is generally prohibited.
After the Danes had lived without restrictions for almost two months, first the health passport and then the wearing of a mask were reintroduced in November. 80 percent of people over the age of five are fully vaccinated, and over a million people have already received a booster vaccination.
